European Heritage Days: the memory of places, people and websites
Every year in September, the European Heritage Days open a range of historic monuments, archives, museums and other cultural institutions to the public. The aim of the event is to highlight the importance of cultural heritage and to strengthen the public’s connection to the history of regions, towns and villages.
Nowadays, websites are also part of our cultural memory. Much of the information about local traditions, heritage sites, associations and cultural events is now created solely in digital form. This is precisely why web archiving is so important, as it helps to preserve records of the life of communities and regions for future generations. Smaller local websites deserve particular attention, as they are often the first to disappear from the internet.

Stará Jihlava
A website dedicated to the history of the town of Jihlava, which can now only be found in the archives. It contains historical photographs, articles on the town’s history and old maps.

Historie obce Sobíňov
A website dedicated to the detailed history of the village of Sobíňov in the Vysočina region was available online until around 2017. As well as featuring historical photographs, it also describes the various parts of the village, its buildings and landmarks, and its inhabitants.
